IRS urges people to file tax returns

The Thunderword Mar 04, 2021

The Internal Revenue Service has issued a reminder for people who were eligible but did not receive one or both of their Economic Impact (Stimulus) Payments to file a 2020 tax return, as they may still be eligible to claim their payment.

Stimulus payments were issued in two rounds based on individuals’ 2019 tax returns, and have been issued to everyone who was eligible.

If, however, an individual did not receive one of their stimulus payments, or did not receive the full amount of payment, they must file a 2020 tax return in order to claim their payment through the Recovery Rebate Credit.

This following IRS webpage can be used to confirm when and how payments were issued to an individual: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment. If any part of the payment was not received, the Recovery Rebate Credit may be claimed through filing a 2020 tax return.

An individual who was not eligible for stimulus payment based on their 2019 tax return also may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit if they now meet the requirements based on their 2020 tax return.

More information on the Recovery Rebate Credit and Economic Impact Payments can be found at https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments.
