Last weekend, Highline’s tennis team was defeated in two matches, one at Lewis and Clark State College and a conference match at Spokane Community College.
Even though the Thunderbirds find themselves in a two game losing streak, the team will take that as motivation as they move on to their next match.
In Lewis-Clark State College, the Thunderbirds faced a heavy-weight opponent that included National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics four-year athletes.
“We had two very different matches this weekend. Friday, we played indoors against a strong NAIA 4-year opponent Lewis-Clark State College. We stepped up to that match well. We lost, but played tough and I was pleased to see some grit from the TBirds,” said Head Coach Laura Rosa
Saturday’s match against Spokane Community College had the Thunderbirds facing the elements as well as their opponents, as they had to accommodate playing in an outdoor match.
“Unfortunately, Saturday we did not put together our best match and fell to Spokane. We simply did not adjust well to the elements outdoors. How we recover from that loss will ultimately be crucial moving toward championship weekend,” said Coach Rosa.
To become more successful at playing tennis, practicing outdoors more often will be a preparation tactic the team uses following these two fundamental matches.
“We have two conference matches left and plan on taking full advantage of those opportunities. We have added a few extra outdoor practices in the coming weeks, which we hope will add to our preparation for the upcoming NWAC tournament,” said Rosa.
Every single member of the team tried their best to fight to end with a balanced record. Kinsey Lockhart even showed a surprising amount of skill and strength during an intensive match against a power hitter from Lewis-Clark State College.
“Kinsey Lockhart put up a great battle at the number one position against LCSC. She is learning to manage the power hitters well,” said Coach Rosa.
