Earth Week tries to find ways to go green for the world’s ongoing climate crisis

Highline is hosting Earth Week 2023 from April 17-22 with a weeklong series of events for students, faculty, and staff to take part in. 

Faculty member Woody Moses said in an email that everyone is welcome, and by doing so, some students may find opportunities to improve their grade for a course at Highline. 

“Bring your class! Bring yourself! Offer extra credit! We’ve got lots of great events! Come check them out!,” Moses said.

Students learn about the Amazon river and the work of conservationists in the area.

The events will consist of different hosts and various activities each day contributing to the message for that day. 

“Thursday, we have the campus cleanup, which is an event and Saturday is the STEAM event, which is [also] an event,” Moses said. 

In the same email from Woody Moses, a list of all the events for Earth Week 2023 at Highline is seen, including the two remaining for this week: 

“Monday 4/17

  • 2:10 – 3:20 pm: Science Seminar- How Climate Change is Impacting the World Right Now and What We Can Learn from the Montreal Protocol by Jacob Selander ([Building] 3-102)

Tuesday 4/18

  • 11 -11:50 am: Shared Responsibilities, Indigenous Knowledge and Protecting All Our Relations by Matt Remle (Lakota) and Rachel Heaton (Muckleshoot) co-founders of Mazaska Talks (Building 7)
  • 12:15 – 1:20 pm: The Effects of Hurricane Katrina on the Black and Brown People of New Orleans by LaToya Johnson (Building 7)
  • 1:00– 2:00 pm: Harvest Kale! with Bobby Butler, Luckisha Phillips and Woody Moses (Highline Garden)

Wednesday 4/19

Thursday 4/20

  • 12:30 – 1:20 pm: Campus Clean Up with Tracy Brigham (meet on the East Side of the HSU)

Saturday 4/22 (Earth Day)

  • 11 am – 1 pm: STEAM DAY WORKSHOP! Bring your family! (16-106),” Moses said. 

The purpose of Earth Week 2023 is for students to engage in interactive activities and expand their knowledge, Woody Moses said.
