Highline College honors the man himself with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Week 2023.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is on Monday, January 16, and it marks the beginning of the week dedicated to community, justice, and remembering the legacy of a King.
Highline has a history of honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. going back as far as 2011. Throughout the week that Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on, Highline has hosted keynote speakers, film screenings, workshops, and more to help revitalize and educate the community on what Dr. King Jr. stood for.
This year, there will be events on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday following Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
On Tuesday, January 17, there will be an opening keynote with Dr. Paige Gardner, an assistant professor of Student Development Administration at Seattle University. The Keynote will take place in Building 8 at Mt. Constance/Olympus from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Afterwards, there will be a vision board activity workshop with Dr. Gardner from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and a legacy event hosted by Highline’s Global Student Ambassadors from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
On Wednesday January 18, Dr. Robert Jensen will host a Zoom meeting, where he will delve into the past to learn how to deal with the future, drawing on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The meeting will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
On campus, back in Building 8 in Mt Olympus and Mt. Constance, there will be an event highlighting community growth and local businesses from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The event, known as “Highlighting Community Pillars: The Impact of Local Businesses on Community Growth, Unity, and Resilience”, will be hosted by several guest panelists.
On Thursday, January 19, Highline will be hosting a musical event in Mt. Townsend, Building 8. There will be a concert and a presentation from the iBuild Bridges Foundation. This event will start at 12:15 p.m. and ends at 1:45 p.m.
