“Silent Hill 2” remake revisited

Staff Reporter May 21, 2026

**This article contains spoilers.**

In the year 2001, the game studio Konami released “Silent Hill 2” which is not a sequel to “Silent Hill” but its own story. It was loved by the fans for its story, psychological horror, and atmosphere. Over 20 years later, Konami announced that the beloved game “Silent Hill 2” was going to get a remake set to release for October 2024.

At first fans were delighted to hear the news. Until the development team was revealed: Blooper Team. Fans were not excited to hear that Blooper Team was in charge of remaking such a beloved game due to their rocky past with previous video games with things like ‘walking simulators’, lack of gameplay depth, and how they handle heavy topics like mental health.

With each trailer releasing, more and more doubt came out of the community with many comparisons to “Resident Evil”. Blooper Team has faced a lot of pressure mainly from the online hate they would receive from the community

However after the release, fans loved the remake – with plenty of consumers even calling it better than the original. “Silent Hill 2” made it to a nominee for the game awards but unfortunately didn’t win any awards. Fans felt like James Sunderland’s actor,  Luke Roberts, was robbed after he gave an outstanding performance. But fortunately, he won other awards from different programs

The ratings were great as well, Metacritic gave “Silent Hill 2” an 86, Steam had a 94% of positive reviews, and IGN gave it 8/10.

𝕭𝖔𝖆𝖌𝖗𝖎𝖚𝖘 on Steam said, “Possibly the greatest horror ever made. The game is scary af, very unsettling and depressing. I don’t think I ever played something as dark and scary as this.”

When I was a kid there was a game called “The Suffering” it was very scary and since then there were no other games that scared me as much as “The Suffering” did. But “Silent Hill 2” tops it. Also scaring a grown man is harder than a little kid but “Silent Hill 2” manages to do so.

And by scary I don’t mean cheap screams. The game barely has any. It scares you with the darkness and the atmosphere. It is so dark that half of the time your brain is imagining things that aren’t even there and it is the scariest thing ever because in your imagination everything feels super real.

No amount of polygons and ray tracing can create a level of reality that your brain does in your head. The scariest movies and games barely show you any monsters, they let your brain imagine them and it is much scarier than just another CGI zombie on the screen.”

The “Silent Hill 2” remake is a one-to-one retelling of the original video game that was released in 2001 with a couple minor changes.

The story follows our protagonist James Sunderland, who is searching for his wife, Mary, after he receives a letter from her asking him to find her in the town of Silent Hill. The thing is, Mary died from a terminal disease three years ago. James does question if Mary could even be there, but he goes either way.

The remake starts exactly the same as the original: James Sunderland stares at himself in the mirror of a dirty public restroom. Right off the bat, James gives us the “I got a letter” speech where he tells us about the letter he received from his wife, Mary.

The atmosphere is quite haunting. From the fog filled with monsters to the rotting walls of buildings in the other world.

The sound design does an amazing job making you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s completely silent while other times you randomly hear a loud bang as if you’re meant to expect to jump out. During the first half you pick up a radio and the radio plays static every time an enemy is nearby.

The combat is quite similar to the style of the “Resident Evil” remakes and follows the common survival horror formula with items scattered round the area, item management, and solving puzzles to progress with the story.

Overall, “Silent Hill 2” is an outstanding game that many people will enjoy. Since then Konami released “Silent Hill f” in September 2025 and announced two more additions to the franchise, “Silent Hill Townfall” and “Silent Hill 1” remake. Who knows what Konami will do in these games but we will have to wait to find out.

You meet other characters who are in Silent Hill for their own reasons such as Eddie, Angela, Laura, and Maria. Maria is an interesting one – she looks exactly like Mary but with different clothes, hair, and personality. The town seems to call out to these characters alongside James.

The sound track is another great part of the video game. There’s one track in particular that stands out: Black Fairy.  It plays in sequence right after James watches a tape and learns that Mary is indeed dead. The illness didn’t kill her, he did. He suffocated her with a pillow. After sitting for a while James hears Mary’s voice through the radio and goes out to find her.

The track plays while the entire environment is rotting, molding even. All you could make out of the track is despair? Grief? Confusion? James makes it to the basement and the enemies look weak and don’t even bother fighting back.

The game has eight endings with a couple jokes – but the context won’t be mentioned.
