***The following statement was submitted by the Executive Cabinet of Highline College directly to the ThunderWord. This statement is in response to an open letter published in last week’s edition. The claims and opinions expressed are their own and do not reflect the opinions of the ThunderWord. We are publishing this letter in its entirety and original writing.***
Dear Highline College Community,
Executive Cabinet members read the open letter that was posted in the Thursday, November 27, 2025 edition of the ThunderWord. We acknowledge the sentiments and experiences that were shared. We are committed to addressing the fundamental issues and systemic concerns raised in the letter. We understand that some of the systemic challenges outlined in the letter stem from complex, interconnected issues. There is no single or easy fix. Our efforts to mitigate these challenges will require sustained and collaborative effort.
Executive Cabinet is responsible for and accountable to you – students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. We strive to build stronger relationships with you and recognize the harm that is caused when trust and respect have been eroded. If this was about federal policy changes or state budgets, that would be enough to cause the stress and imbalance we all have experienced. We recognize that what is outlined in the letter goes deeper into the fabric of our community and the bond we share in service to our students. We are committed to supporting our community better.
We also want to confirm that, even amidst these challenges, Highline College is in a strong position to do this difficult work. Our enrollment has grown, our financial standing is firm, and our faculty and staff remain deeply committed to our students. This stability provides the solid foundation we need to address the critical issues called out in the letter and shared in open forums.
Sincerely,
Jamilyn, Rolita, Danielle, Melanie, Maribel, Michael, Tim and Josh
