Freshman Kenny Curtis is having a big impact on Highline’s basketball success so far this season.

Curtis graduated from Rainier Beach High School and decided to play basketball at Saint Martin’s University in fall 2019. However, he transferred to Highline after his first semester in Lacey. He ultimately decided to redshirt the winter 2020 season.

The college game has been a seamless transition so far for Curtis. In conference play he is currently averaging 15 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists on 46.3 percent shooting from the field, 50 percent from three-point range. He leads the NWAC in free throw percentage with 100 percent. His overall numbers are very similar.

“In high school I had a lot of experience playing against bigger guys, a lot of which were pros, so it wasn’t that hard to get acclimated playing at this speed,” said Curtis.

Curtis, who is a 5’9 guard, does not let his height disadvantage on the court affect him.

“I have been doubted my whole life because of my size, so I just go out there and be me on the court and play basketball,” said Curtis.

“Kenny is really quick, changes speeds well and is a great shooter,” said Highline Head Coach Che Dawson.

“My favorite part of my game is that I can get anywhere on the court at any time without someone stopping me,” said Curtis.

Off the court, Curtis said he tries to lead by example.

“Kenny is a really personable young man. He enjoys relationships with his coaches and teammates and is very genuine,” said Dawson.

Curtis said he has high hopes for the T-Birds.

“I believe we can make it to the NWAC title,” said Curtis.

After his time at Highline, Curtis plans to attend a four year university and continue playing basketball while he finishes his bachelor’s degree.
