Highline hosts 2024 Pink Prom: Glitter & Glow.

Q Center’s Pink Prom is an appropriately glittery occasion

Staff Reporter May 30, 2024

The Pink Prom hosted by the LGBTQIA+ Task Force, Q Center, Center for Cultural and Inclusive Excellence, and the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Transformation consisted of a live DJ, pizza, cake, an assortment of flashing party favors, and performances by drag queens and kings.

Held in the student union in Building 8 on May 24, tables were set out with bright flowers serving as the centerpieces. The majority of the bottom floor was set aside for a lively dance floor, with DJ Mike Baskett playing classic hits from artists like Madonna or remixes of the most popular songs of the 2020s.

Building 8 was transformed to a Glitter & Glow space for Pink Prom.

The event had all the makings of a classic high school prom, something many of the attendees did not receive given the COVID-19 pandemic taking place during many people’s last years of high school.

With an open snack bar featuring Domino’s pizza, Jimmy John’s sandwiches, an assortment of chips, soda, candy, and cake, it welcomed attendees to sit down and chat amongst their tablemates while enjoying the medley of free food.

Thrown by the LGBTQIA+ club at Highline, the Pink Prom welcomed attendees with an arch of multicolored balloons and a rainbow backsplash to take prom pictures in front of. With an emphasis on acceptance and community pride, the event was extremely successful in creating a welcoming and lively atmosphere.

The attendees were dressed in classic prom wear with the glamor the Pink Prom theme demanded, with many embracing glittery makeup and pink formalwear.

Taking advantage of the free props and party favors, the dance floor was aglow with flashing sunglasses, and the pulsing lights of the jelly jewelry in the forms of rings and necklaces.

About an hour into the event, a performance by drag queen Kylie Mooncakes took over the dance floor to cheers from the audience and a lively soundtrack from Baskett. Quickly following, was a performance by Seattle’s premier drag king, Caesar Hart.

Making his way through the lively crowd, Hart interacted with the audience throughout his entire performance, fostering a collaboration with the audience.

The Pink Prom was an opportunity for students to engage with the community in a fun, casual environment as well as a good excuse to get dressed up and enjoy a night of dancing, food, live performances, and celebration.
