The game “Wuthering Waves” was released this month. According to the creators it’s a “story-rich open-world action RPG.” You start as the amnesiac character Rover, and you explore the world ahead of you.

The game had more than 30 million pre-registrations and the reveal stream has over 400k views. The game server opened around one and a half hours earlier than scheduled, leading many to be unprepared for the grand opening. Within the first ten minutes of the servers opening, over 100k accounts had been created already as signified by the user ID number.

“Wuthering Waves” is known as an open world “Gacha” Game. The word “Gacha” is derived from the Japanese word gachapon. A gachapon is a device where users insert a coin and randomly receive a capsule that contains a toy. Oftentimes there are toys that are rarer than the others and one can guarantee they receive it by buying out the entire machine.

In a similar sense, “Wuthering Waves” and other games like “Genshin Impact” and “Tower of Fantasy” contain a gacha mechanic. The gacha mechanic is how players receive new characters and weapons. Similar to emptying a gachapon machine, one can guarantee a character by “pulling” a set number of times. The word “pulling” is in the sense of pulling a toy out of a gachapon.

There are different rarities to both characters and weapons, however all can be used in the gameplay of the combat. “Wuthering Waves” offers a higher skill ceiling compared to other games in the same vein with many new techniques being developed day by day.

“Wuthering Waves” has abilities seen in other game genres. The combat focuses around parrying specific attacks, dodging enemy attacks, and using counter attacks after dodging. The mechanics in the game enable techniques that allow you to jump higher to reach out of reach places and techniques that allow you to use multiple characters at once, bringing a higher skill ceiling,

For a long time, “Genshin Impact” has dominated the genre for multiple years ever since the pandemic. People have been looking for a game that would compete with Genshin. The reason being, competition would lead to innovation. As of now, we have “Wuthering Waves”.

There was another game that appeared, called “Tower of Fantasy”. However, the game was unpolished and led most to become disinterested after a few hours. Today, “Tower of Fantasy” is a game that simply exists. The game had plenty of hype behind it and failed to meet the expectations they created.

While not as bad as “Tower of Fantasy”, “Wuthering Waves” has its own grievances. Many people on lower to mid-tier devices have noted that they have experienced performance issues. Even a handful of people who are equipped with powerful machines were having issues with performance.

There is also a sizable group of users who dislike how the story develops. The story develops at an arguably rapid pace. The story creates an artificial sense of superiority for the Rover, even though there has barely been anything noteworthy occurring, the character’s popularity is imbalanced with the character’s achievements.

Though the developers have been hard at work and have been improving the game through constructive criticism. There are many fascinating features as well as compensation for any issues that might have inconvenienced the users.

First impressions are an important part of many games. It can make or break a game. Although “Wuthering Waves” has had a rocky start, most users can see the potential the game has. There are many things that compensate for the issues. A large attraction for the game is its unique combat. So, in order to experience the great aspects, users are willing to overlook the smaller issues.

“Wuthering Waves” has plenty of room for improvement, some will jump ship and stay afloat a more stable ship. While those willing to bear through the wuthering waves might find something that is just as great as the stable ship, perhaps it has the opportunity to rise above.
