The new year has started off with a change to the state’s minimum wage. The 2024 minimum wage went up 54 cents (a 3.4% increase from 2023). This change was needed because of the rise in the cost of living. According to the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, the new minimum wage has changed from $15.74 in 2023 to $16.28 in 2024.
In mid-September of each year, the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries makes a cost-of-living adjustment to the minimum wage. This is based on the Federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage and Clerical Workers.
The new minimum wage was announced on Sept. 30, 2023 and it took effect on Jan. 1.
In some local jurisdictions the minimum wage is even higher. In Seattle the minimum wage is $19.97, in Sea Tac it is $19.71, and in Tukwila $20.29.
Although, there are some cases in which an employer may pay some workers less than the state minimum wage. This includes minors that are 14 to 15 years old and workers who meet certain criteria, such as those who are exempt from the Minimum Wage Act.
In addition, employers can apply for a sub-minimum wage certificate in the following areas: certified on the job learner, certificated student worker and student learners, certificated workers with disabilities, and certain apprentices.
