Girona defeated FC Barcelona 2-1 at Montilivi in a dramatic Catalan derby, a result that cost Barcelona the top spot in La Liga and left them two points behind Real Madrid. The match was intense from the beginning and full of important moments, missed chances, and controversial decisions that ultimately decided the outcome.

The game started at a high tempo, with Girona showing early energy and forcing goalkeeper Joan García into action within the first minute. Barcelona struggled to control possession at times but still created several dangerous chances. Lamine Yamal was heavily involved in the attack and had two close-range opportunities that he failed to convert. In one key moment, he broke through on goal and attempted a chip over goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, but the keeper reacted quickly and made the save.

Raphinha, returning from injury, looked sharp and active on the right wing. He created space for himself multiple times and came close to scoring, including one powerful effort that struck the post. Ferran Torres also had a shot go narrowly wide as Barcelona pushed to take the lead before halftime.

Lamine Yamal smashed a penalty on to the post in the first half.

The most important moment of the first half came in stoppage time. Dani Olmo was fouled inside the penalty area after his foot was stepped on, and the referee awarded Barcelona a penalty. It was a golden opportunity to go into the break with a lead. Lamine Yamal stepped up to take the penalty, but his shot hit the base of the post and bounced away. Instead of leading 1-0, Barcelona went into halftime frustrated at 0-0.

The breakthrough finally came in the 59th minute. Jules Kounde delivered a precise cross from the right side of the pitch, and Pau Cubarsí rose above the defenders to head the ball perfectly into the top corner. It was a well worked goal and gave Barcelona a deserved 1-0 lead.

However, their advantage lasted only two minutes. In the 61th minute, Girona responded. Vladyslav Vanat made a strong run down the wing and delivered a low pass into the box, where Thomas Lemar tapped the ball into the net from close range to make it 1-1. The quick equalizer shifted the momentum back to the home side.

As the game entered the final 20 minutes, both teams pushed aggressively for a winner. Joan García made several crucial saves, including a brilliant stop from close range to deny Vanat. Girona continued to attack with confidence, while Barcelona tried to respond through quick transitions and crosses into the box.

The decisive moment arrived in the 86th minute. After a frantic attacking move inside the penalty area, substitute Fran Beltrán found space just inside the box and fired a low shot past García to give Girona a 2-1 lead. Barcelona players protested, believing there had been a foul on Kounde in the build-up, but after a VAR review, the goal was allowed to stand.

In stoppage time, tensions rose as Girona’s Joel Roca was sent off for a reckless challenge on Yamal. Barcelona threw everything forward, even pushing goalkeeper Joan García upfield during the final moments, but they were unable to find an equalizer.

The missed penalty in the first half, the quick equalizer after taking the lead, and the late goal in the 86th minute were the key moments that defined the match. With this defeat, Barcelona suffered their second loss in less than a week and surrendered their position at the top of La Liga.
