BOXABL positions itself amid growing US housing crisis

Bringing innovation to the forefront of housing construction, BOXABL is a company rethinking how homes are designed, built, and delivered. For millions of Americans, the cost of housing has moved beyond a financial challenge and into a crisis.

According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies, the State of the Nations Housing 2024 report shows that homeowners across the United States are experiencing significant strain due to high housing costs. As housing costs continue to rise and construction timelines grow longer, the need for ways to make the construction process faster, less expensive, and more efficient has become increasingly urgent.

Owner and founder duo Paolo and Galiano Tiramani set out to revolutionize the housing industry by creating a new, sleek, and streamlined approach designed to accelerate housing construction. Tiramani emphasized, “We’ve got a new way to build housing that’s better, cheaper, faster and that can solve the worldwide housing crisis.”

Their goal was to stay true to their passion of using sustainable materials while cutting both the cost of building and the time required to complete each home, without sacrificing the quality of new construction.

BOXABL’s manufacturing process is the centerpiece to how the company is able to build homes quickly and efficiently. Each prefabricated unit is constructed with plumbing, electrical, and appliances integrated into a single foldable structure. This factory-based method allows BOXABL to apply automation techniques similar to those used in automobile manufacturing. BOXABL is able to produce multiple fully functional homes in a factory setting in less than a day.

Recognizing that innovation has been lacking in the industry, they sought to answer a billion dollar question: Can building a house become an automated process? Can multiple homes be built in a factory setting each day? The answer is yes. With more than 60 patents related to building and modular technology, the Tiramanis’ vision of quick service homes is becoming a reality. According to available figures, BOXABL has been valued at roughly $3.5 billion since its launch in 2017.

That vision is clearly displayed in BOXABL’s flagship model, the Casita. The 361 square feet prefabricated home is delivered fully finished and move-in ready. Each Casita includes a full kitchen equipped with a refrigerator, stove and oven, microwave, and kitchen cabinetry – along with a complete bathroom featuring a shower, backlit mirrors, toilet, counter, and sink. Instead of being a prototype or concept, the Casita is a tangible example of BOXABL’s streamlined approach to providing efficient, fully functional housing solutions.

The shift towards automation is also reflected in the company’s rapid expansion. In 2023, BOXABL, based in Las Vegas, opened their second and third manufacturing warehouses, both larger than the original 170,000 square foot facility. The company’s expansion shows a growing demand for its modular homes and underscores the company’s push to scale production while maintaining efficiency. BOXABL’s factory base approach positions it several steps ahead of traditional housing construction methods.

The challenges of rising housing costs and lengthy construction timelines have sparked innovation in housing building methods. BOXABL’s factory based approach reflects an effort to address these challenges by prioritizing speed, efficiency, and consistency. As the question of how the housing construction will evolve, BOXABL’s building model offers one possible direction for how homes could be built in the future.
