As winter break comes, graduating tutors and availability to resources go

Staff Reporter Dec 04, 2025

As the quarter comes to a close and some students finish their Highline careers, the college is reduced to a limited operational capacity for the break, with some services available over the break. Many departments, like the Academic Success Center (ASC) say goodbye to valued students who supported their peers.

The ASC would like to recognize our graduating tutors, Emily Ortiz, for her contributions to this fall quarter. ASC Director Sheena Hendrix said, “Emily has been amazing to work with. She has consistently shown up for ASC leadership and our HC students. From tutoring, to tabling campus events. She’s done amazing work. While I’ll miss seeing her in the ASC, I’m excited to see her do great things.”

The program specialist Jealessa Smith said, “Emily has played a major role within the Math Resource Center (MRC) and the [ASC] community. Throughout her time in the center, Emily has demonstrated exceptional patience, clarity, and leadership in supporting students. She excels at breaking down challenging concepts and fostering a welcoming environment where learners feel confident and empowered. Emily’s continued commitment to academic success, paired with her genuine passion for helping others, has made her an invaluable resource to both students and staff. We are incredibly proud of Emily’s recent achievements, and we know she will continue to thrive wherever life takes her.”

As a reminder, the last day of fall in person tutoring for Public Speaking Center, Tutoring Center, and Writing is tomorrow. The MRC final working day is Monday, Dec. 8. The MRC continues to be a key resource for anyone seeking assistance with math courses, offering in person tutoring and study support. We encourage students to make use of the services while tutors are still available before finals.

In a new move by the Wellness Center, the gym will remain OPEN during the winter break, excluding holidays. Finals week and winter break hours are Monday through Fridays, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
