Highline tennis team shines bright in 2024

The 2024 season ends in a second-place finish for the Highline women’s tennis team, as they fell to a Spokane Community College with a 6-3 loss in the championship final. The season proved a rollercoaster of victories and setbacks, culminating in an exciting journey to the NWAC Championship.

Led by coach Laura Rosa, the season saw the team face tough opponents and made the six players truly prove their mettle on the court.

The season began with a dominant performance against Bellevue College, securing a solid 7-0 victory. Highline continued its winning streak with a convincing 7-2 victory over Spokane Community College. However, they faced tough losses against American River College and Menlo College, highlighting the challenges that awaited them.

Despite the setbacks, Highline rebounded with determination and earned crucial victories against Sierra College and Treasure Valley Community College. The team demonstrated its depth and talent, with standout performances from players like Kinsey Lockhart, Riley Cordova, and Sophia Crosby.

As the season progressed, Highline faced formidable opponents in the playoffs, including Treasure Valley Community College and Spokane Community College. In a tense semifinal match against Bellevue College, Highline had a stellar performance, dominating the court with precision and skill.

Kinsey Lockhart led the charge with an impressive display, securing a crucial victory in the singles match. The team’s chemistry and cohesion were on display as they cruised to a resounding 8-1 victory, propelling them to the NWAC Championship Finals.

In the championship game, Highline faced Spokane Community College in a highly anticipated matchup. The tension was palpable as both teams battled fiercely for supremacy on the court. Despite their best efforts, Highline came up short against the formidable Spokane team and ultimately conceded the championship title with a 6-3 loss.

Spokane’s dominance in the doubles matches proved decisive and they secured the title with a big victory. Despite the loss, Highline showed resilience and sportsmanship, with players like Kinsey Lockhart, Riley Cordova, and Sophia Crosby turning in standout performances throughout the game.

Reflecting on the season, coach Laura Rosa praised her team’s dedication and effort, despite not claiming a championship. “230 days ago these six women stepped on the court together for the first time,” said Rosa. “They grew together as athletes, leaders, students and as a team.”

As the season comes to a close, the legacy of the Highline women’s tennis team will live on as a source of inspiration for future generations of athletes. Their journey may have ended with a silver medal at the NWAC Championships, but their indomitable spirit and determination will be echoed in the halls of Highline College for years to come.
