“Hogwarts Legacy”: A review of a new unforgettable game

Paige Willard Staff Reporter May 09, 2024

Based off of the Harry Potter franchise there have been many games that have been modeled after the books and movies, with all the original characters in place. But never before has there been quite a unique game made after this franchise that creates a whole new story like “Hogwarts Legacy”.

What’s more, not only does this game have its own story line and main quests, but depending on the house you choose this main story quest is a little bit different for each house.

Another feature that makes this gaming experience more unique is that the world map is huge and full of secrets – secret caves, tombs, and the one forbidden forest. With a hidden magical creature known as the classic unicorn. However, lots of other story mode games have huge maps. But what other game lets you travel by flying on a broomstick?

That’s not even to mention the many secrets within the Hogwarts castle. There are secret rooms to unlock, and puzzles to solve. Then besides the beautiful aesthetics of the castle’s architecture to admire, there’s secret places hidden within the castle; sort of unmarked on the map, like the undercroft, the map chamber underneath the castle, and your very own room of requirement.

There are countless things to do, and explore. It’s easy to spend hours playing this game. Since there are four different houses to play as, there are almost endless possibilities. As you go on playing in any quest small or large, you also get choices in how you respond to people or choices you make for the next step in the game. More often than not, there seems to be good choices, and then a bad choice.

It gives you that choose-your-own-adventure feel as most story mode games do, and reflects what kind of character you’re playing – more heroic one like Gryffindors, or a more villainous one like Slytherins.

A favorite part in this gameplay though, is saving all the different kinds of creatures from poachers, and making room for vivariums in the room of requirement – that way they still have the ability to roam free. It’s fun capturing beasts in your nab-sack, and then taking care of them by feeding them and brushing them.

There’s fwoopers, mooncalves, unicorns, thestrals, a graphorn, and the famous hippogriff. And those aren’t even half of the creatures from fantastic beasts. Furthermore, you can collect the fur from these beasts, and use the magical properties to put into your wizard gear using the magic loom.

One cool fact about this game is that there is a chronological order to the franchise. With “Hogwarts Legacy” being based in 1890, Fantastic Beasts taking place between 1926 and 1945, and then Harry Potter existing from the early to late ’90s, one could say you are playing the prequel to the prequel of Harry Potter.

There is the possibility that this article doesn’t even do the game justice, as there would be so much more about the game to cover. Overall, it’s an amazing and fun game to play and the graphics are astounding, both inside and out of the famed Hogwarts castle.
