Aubrey Sears Staff Reporter Sep 28, 2023

Highline College is back in session for the Fall 2023 quarter, marked by an uptick in enrollment and the return of a wealth of resources offered to students. With the arrival of fall (and the return of rain to the Pacific Northwest), Highline College is alive with renewed energy as students, both new and returning, fill campus for the start of the 2023-2024 academic year.

As students embark on their academic journeys, their excitement and anticipation are palpable, although some are grappling with nervousness about the challenges ahead. But listen up Thunderbirds: Highline College wants you to soar!

This place is bursting with caring folks and awesome resources to help you thrive. Let’s explore some keys to unlocking your potential on campus and in your academic journey. Consider these services the helping hands of caring campus staff and peers who want you to succeed. Some key resources include the community food pantry, the Benefits Hub, the library and reference librarians, the writing center, the public speaking center, and the math tutoring center.

Feeling hungry or strapped for cash? No worries. Hit up the community food pantry for FREE eats and essentials – no judgments here. “Your education is priority number one, so let us take care of your basic needs,” said Ciara White, Benefits Hub coordinator. The pantry welcomes students, faculty, alumni – anyone in need of a helping hand. Fill out a simple form about your family, and the team will hook you up.

White also says too many individuals assume the pantry isn’t for them – FALSE! It’s open to everyone, regardless of income. The best part? Students share recipes and pictures of meals made with pantry goodies. In this uplifting community, the pantry’s goal is to nourish you so you can crush your classes.

Although be aware that selection varies weekly based on donations. Swing by to grab lunch on-the-go or stock your pantry. Hygiene items are also available for students and families. Want to get involved? Email the pantry or visit to volunteer. Donate unexpired food and new personal care items anytime. Extra free food can also be found in Building 19.

Struggling financially? The Benefits Hub has your back! Their services help students access public benefits, food, hygiene items and more. The goal here is to lift non-academic stressors so you can focus on learning. The message is clear: connect with these caring advocates and succeed!

Easily get help by registering online or visiting Building 1 to chat with the team. “The biggest mistake is not realizing everything we offer,” said staff members Monique Green and Katina Sims. That includes discounts on your internet, utilities and more.

This year, they’re pumped about all the resources for financial aid, housing and beyond. Their top priority is ensuring every student gets what they need to enroll and stay in school. (FYI – financial aid is done quarterly, not for the full year.) The Hub helps with tuition, books, parking for full-timers, and more.

The writing center provides personalized feedback and writing strategies from talented tutors to help you grow and improve. Make an appointment to get dedicated time with a tutor to review essays, research papers, resumes, cover letters, and more. They can assist with brainstorming, organizing, revising, citing sources, grammar, and making your writing shine.

Public speaking got you nervous? There is help! The stellar coaches will build up your skills and confidence before presentations. They can help you write, prepare and practice any speech or presentation you may have. Or they can just be your personal cheerleaders as you practice and improve in a judgment-free zone.
