Kazuma and his party of loveable comrades.

Loner gets reincarnated into another world with a goddess

“KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!” (January 2016, Studio Deen) is another isekai title, however it’s one that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

This anime follows the loner shut-in named Satou Kazuma (voiced by Fukushima Jun) dying in one of the most embarrassing ways, thinking he was saving a young girl from an oncoming truck, where he ends up meeting the goddess of reincarnation named Aqua (Amamiya Sora).

Kazuma drags Aqua into the world he gets reincarnated into where they’re tasked to kill the demon lord to have Kazuma return home and let Aqua back into heaven.

The plot of this show is like every other isekai ever, dude dies then gets reincarnated and has to fight a demon lord, right? Well that’s about where the similarities between KonoSuba and every other isekai end, you see Kazuma is a loser, he has no skills, no talent, and ends up in the absolute worst situation all the time. Aqua is about as useless as Kazuma even though she’s a god, all she can do is dispel undead and get trapped in a toad’s mouth.

There are two more party members who are as bad as the both of the first two. First is Megumin (Takahashi Rie), a descendant of the crimson demon clan, she is a fearsome creature that uses explosion magic to annihilate her enemies, too bad that she can only use it once a day. Last is Darkness (Kayano Ai), a crusader who with her power protects the weak, by using herself as a human shield, and enjoying it. Quite literally everyone in this world is strange to a varying degree.

Now to talk about something else, the art in this anime is very respective of the characters, goofy. The monsters are unique colors like blue and pink, there are giant running lizards that will just trample the characters, and a guy with huge main character syndrome.

Another example of this silly nature is the music, it’s good, yes, but it’s also just very stupendous. Practically everything in this show was written to not take itself seriously, like the story.

Things just have a way of happening in the dumbest of ways, situations are resolved by the party about as much as they’re caused. Most of the things they have to deal with are a direct cause of their actions in a previous episode, or a series of events. A good example of this is Megumin and Kazuma going on “explosion walks” one day they stumble upon a keep far away and Megumin blows it up daily for months, to the point where the occupant of the outpost, one of the demon lord’s generals, confronts the town where they’re staying, because he’s tired of the constant explosions.

Everything in this show is just so silly that it works out to its favor, the imperfect characters, the shenanigans that occur due to their shortcomings, and the way that the show knows it’s dumb, it embraces those flaws to make one of the most relatable shows. There’s no power fantasy, nothing that feels unnaturally overdrawn, it’s just a show that knows what it is, a goofy, turn your brain off, enjoyable series.

A good portion of people may not like this show, but that’s okay, the ones who do watch it and do enjoy it have a blast. It’s just a show that’s meant to have fun with, and that’s okay, even if there are flaws, who cares, viewers laugh alongside the cast, they cry with them and mourn. This show is meant to be stupid, so overall if thats something a viewer wants to watch, go watch it.
