With a rather young team coming in to start the 2022-2023 season, Coach Steve Turcotte’s goal is steady improvement. “We have a pretty young team but you can expect us to win and improve each week,” Turcotte said.

With the team’s performance at the Olympic College Invitational, already having game experience is a great way for the team to improve and know what they need to work on.

The Highline men’s team placed 4th in the competition. Tyler Alwert scored 75-76 and was tied for 5th place, Tyler Fullerton scored 82-79 and finished 17th, Derek Kaapana scored 88-78 and was tied for 19th, Kai Wen scored 100-79 and finished 26th.

In addition, female participant Anjali Naidu scored 95-92 and finished 8th.

After the team performed at the Olympic Invitational, Turcotte wants to focus on improving the team’s short game.  “We can get better at chipping and putting but that comes with experience,” Turcotte said.

Last weekend, Highline participated in the Columbia Basin Invitational finishing 8th in the event.

Trey Alwert scored 81-79 and finished 18th, Tyler Fullerton scored 88-84 and finished tied for 37th, Derek Kaapana scored 91-83 and finished tied for 40th, Kai Wen scored 97-87 and finished 45th.

In addition female participants Anjali Naidu scored 99-101 and placed 16th, and Jadyn Shaw scored 129-105 and placed 22nd.

Coach Turcotte focuses on more than just the results of his players and wants to teach his players more than just the mechanics of golf. “I tell my players to be the kind of person people wanna play with. If you’re not easy to play with it takes the fun and enjoyment out of the sport,” Turcotte said.

The next time the Highline golf team walks the green will be April 23-24 at the Bellevue golf course.
