Last Saturday, April 15, the Highline softball team traveled to Clackamas, Ore., to play against the Cougars (Clackamas Community College) in a doubleheader, ending in defeats for both games, 21-2 and 16-1.
Results for the first game were unavailable at press time. In the second game, the Thunderbirds were able to get on the scoreboard early in the first inning when Abigail Wilkins singled, bringing in Daisylynn Laulu for a 1-0 lead. However, Clackamas quickly took control of the game, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the first and then adding 4 more runs in the second inning.
Despite Trinity Marion’s double and Abigail Wilkins’ RBI, the Thunderbirds were unable to mount a comeback against Clackamas’ dominant offense, which was led by Cassidy Phelps’ impressive performance. Phelps hit a double, a triple, and a homerun, and had 5 RBIs in the game.
Mia Falotico, Violet Loftus, and Zoey Ellis also hit doubles for Clackamas, while Felicity Pastrana, Mia Falotico, Violet Loftus, Riley Shopp, Keira Motley, Zoey Ellis, and Natalya Flores all added RBIs to the scoreboard.
The Thunderbirds struggled defensively as well, with Samantha Johnson and Bryanna Saelee each committing 3 errors during the game. Emma Sullivan had the only error for Clackamas.
On the pitching side, Corrina Cunningham took the loss for Highline, giving up 15 hits and 16 runs, 11 earned, with one walk, and no strikeouts in four innings pitched.
In addition, the team had scheduled two home games against the Edmonds College Tritons to play the conference league for April 11, but they were postponed to May 11.
The Thunderbirds’ next game will be played at home on Saturday, April 22, against the Olympic College Rangers.
