Highline students may send in their art applications to Arcturus by the submission deadline on February 14 to be considered.

Dahli Strayer: “Todo Es Posible”

Arcturus is Highline’s literary and art magazine run by students.

“[The Arcturus] showcases the written and visual talents of our students, staff, faculty, and alumni. We are a student editorial team that brings a fresh concept to print each year in June,” the Arcturus website said.

“It has won over a half dozen regional and national awards. Printed right here at the Highline print shop and all work done exclusively by Highline students,” said Susan Rich, faculty for the creative writing and film studies at Highline.

As far as the submission process goes, an active email and a short piece about yourself is needed, the Arcturus website said.

“Requirements:
  • Include an active personal email that we can contact you with, because it may take us a year to get back to you.
  • In your email, please include a short biography (50 words max.) about yourself and your inspiration behind the piece(s),” the website said

The Arcturus website is also said to include several items within your application, such as: document formats, titles, and five pieces of art.

  • “Submit your piece(s) in a single attachment. Please ONLY MS Word documents or Google Docs — NO PDFs.
  • Please DO NOT include your name or other personal information in the piece(s). Please keep multiple pieces on separate pages within your attachment.
  • Please include a title for your piece(s) — even artwork submissions.
  • Include your name and email address. The submitter’s name should be as they would like it to be shown in the journal.
  • Max number of pieces you can submit is FIVE.
  • Please identify if you are Highline College staff, student, alumni, or faculty.
  • Submission may be in your own language; however, a translation must be provided as well.
  • Artwork must be submitted with a high-resolution image,” the website said

Arcturus is looking for students with a strong direct message of what they are trying to get across within their applications, Rich said.

“The list differs for each genre of work but some of the things that come to mind are — a clear intention or idea; strong imagery, and representative of the Highline community in all our different diversities,” she said.

Those who decide to send their applications will receive a response during Spring Quarter from the student editors, Rich said.

Student editors on the Arcturus team are those who work towards the magazine’s editing, publishing, and printing aspects.

What makes Highline’s Arcturus literary magazine so special, you may ask? The people who put in the time to create it, while also getting a touch of hands-on experience, Rich said.

“Students from across different disciplines come together to create a physical product that will be part of Highline forever,” she said. “In addition, students will gain a professional publication credit that will enhance any resume. Not only poetry and prose are accepted, but all visual arts.”
