“Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!” (2019, produced by Bandai Namco Pictures) is a lighthearted anime filled with chaos and lovable miscreants.

The show’s plot is about a boy named Iruma (voiced by Ayumu Murase) who gets sold by his parents to a demon lord named Sullivan (Takaya Kuroda) to be his grandson and go to school in the Demon World. While there, he meets a lot of wacky characters and gets into a load of shenanigans.
The comedy present within the show is entirely unexpected having the audience’s socks, figuratively, blown off. Within the first episode, on the first day of school Iruma gets in a fight and wins against a person who can literally throw fire.
The anime has a very unique color palette (being similar to “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure,” another anime with a very distinct color palette.) An example of this color scheme is the sky being lime green.
Even though this takes place in the actual Judeo-Christain Hell, it’s not all brimstone and flames. Rather being more cutesy, as an example Iruma’s new grandpa shows the audience that by becoming an egg.
While the show is overall pretty good, it still commits a few sins of its own.
The fact that the show is dumb fun works to its bennefit and to its detremit. When it’s not focusing on the main story plot the show tends to be sporadic, like when an episode is just Iruma being an idol.
With how visually enjoyable the backgrounds are, an audience tends to pay more attention to them, making it noticeable when they’re reused. There are also inconsistencies between background characters being detailed in one scene, then shadows in another.
Another problem with the backgrounds is that during action shots there are abstract settings that contrast badly with the more detailed characters. An example is in one scene where the backdrop moves and it makes it look like Iruma is moonwalking.
If an audience is looking for a dumb fun slice of life this is absolutely the show for them, if not then they should keep looking.
