The city of Federal Way will soon see a new resource center intended to provide educational services to individuals in the community, particularly Highline students.
Called the Hub (full name: The Hub: Federal Way Higher Education Center), the center will be a “small extension of Highline’s main campus [and] function as a welcome center of sorts,” said Tammy Hauge, who is the center’s program manager.
“Our goal is to provide something for anyone who walks through our doors, even if that’s just a friendly smile and general information about how to begin one’s journey with higher education,” Hauge said.
She said the school is intended to provide additional resources and opportunities to Federal Way residents who may need them.
“An assessment conducted in Federal Way a few years ago found that there was a need for accessible educational opportunities within the immediate geographical area of the city,” said Hauge. “The Hub hopes to meet those needs.”
The Hub will offer many different resources to interested students, she said.
“We … will provide credit course work that meets general education requirements, as well as non-credit professional development coursework,” said Hauge. “[We’ll also offer] some student service supports, including a few assessment options, selected credited coursework, and professional development options.”
The center came together through a partnership between several local schools – including Highline — and the city of Federal Way, she said.
Right now, things are still in the early stages and as more decisions are finalized, more specific information will be known about the center.
“There is a lot of excitement around this project as many developments are taking place,” Hauge said. “The plan is to begin with a slow, gradual buildup of services and courses offered at the Hub, gathering input from the community regarding the types of supports and classes that we can offer to best meet its educational needs.”
The Hub plans to open its doors to students and community members this fall, she said, and more information will become available over the next few months.
