Highline’s annual Unity through Diversity Week returns this Monday with virtual events, following the theme “Abolition as Healing: Liberating Our Community.”

Unity Week is celebrating its 24th year through five days of events that students, staff and faculty are all welcome to join. These will run from April 26-30. The week is hosted by the Center for Cultural and Inclusive Excellence.

Starting the week off is keynote speaker Clifton “Skye” Williamson, giving a talk titled “Understanding the Power and Place of Compassion in the Abolition Movement.”
This will run Monday, April 26 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Next on Tuesday, is a lecture presented by Mon-Yee Chau, called “Permission to Reject Assimilation: A Labor of Love.” This will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday will bring Dr. Farima Pour-Khorshid’s lecture at 1 to 2:30 pm., “Abolitionist Lessons: Healing and Organizing Toward Education for Liberation.” After this, Dr. Pour-Khorshid will also host a workshop on the topic at hand, which will go from 3 to 4 p.m.
A panel discussion will be held on Thursday, April 29 titled “Mass Incarceration by the Number and a Formerly Incarcerated Student Panel: Names to Numbers.” The panel will include James Robert Jackson, Carolina Landa, Gail Brashear, Jordan Kyle Silveira, and Parris Miller.
Finally, the week will wrap up on Friday with a film series by GlobalFest, from 1 to 3 p.m. Time will also be set aside after each film for discussions.
