1. Establish clear communication

As we may all know, communication is the key when it comes to living with roommates. Having open-ended and honest conversations from the beginning sets the groundwork for developing relationships.

This might look like having discussions on chores, splitting bills, or having guests over. Being open about how you and your roommates feel about these very topics will set boundaries and communication skills.

Highline student Korena Matthaw said that she was facing some difficulties in mathematics and when she started living with her peers, they helped her, and was able to accomplish an A in the class.

2. Set boundaries

It is important to create boundaries with your peers, such as quiet hours or designated spaces for personal belongings.

3. Respect each other’s space

Try to respect each other’s privacy and personal space.

Highline student Queerena said privacy may be one of the most valued boundaries when living with others as this time is for you and only you.

“That giving respect to the peer’s space even makes us more comfortable, close, and more respectful to each other, which even made me more kind to society and even to the peers too,” said Queerena.

4. Clean up after yourself

Keeping your common space clean and tidy can prevent future conflicts.

Cleaning is one of the basic life skills and doing this daily on a routine basis helps with setting chores for everyone and cooperating with your roommates.

5. Address conflicts calmly

If there is a conflict, address it calmly and rationally instead of letting it escalate.

Small fights may lead to even bigger ones and coming up with solutions that are fair among everyone can help with future disagreements.

6. Be considerate

Keep in mind that you are living with other people and being considerate of their needs and schedules is important.

7. Share common spaces

Make an effort to use common spaces together, such as the living room or kitchen.

Highline student Kawer Fathema said that all roommates share the space by being a team and that it makes them feel even closer to each other.

8. Plan activities together

Organize activities, such as movie nights or game nights to build stronger relationships.

9. Reduce stress

Living in a peaceful environment can help reduce stress and promote overall well-being.

The stress of academics, extracurricular activities, and even having a social life can catch up to you. But communicating how you feel and letting your roommates know what’s going on can help with finding trust in each other.

10. Create a positive living environment

A good relationship with your roommates can help create a positive atmosphere in your living space.

These tips may help students and roommates create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and heard. By establishing rules and boundaries you may develop stronger connections with your peers and learn long term life lessons overall.
