A disappointing season ends with T-Birds’ loss

Highline College’s softball team concluded their forgettable 2023 season with a doubleheader against Douglas College at home. Unfortunately, the T-Birds failed to end on a high note, losing their last game.

In the first game, Highline faced a forfeit, resulting in a disappointing start to their final outing. In the second game against Douglas College, the T-Birds struggled to find their momentum.

Douglas College dominated the game, scoring consistently throughout. The final score stood at 10-1 in favor of Douglas College. The Thunderbirds managed only three hits during the game and were unable to mount a comeback.

Douglas College’s batters displayed a strong performance, with Clare VanSpall, Taylor Bowles, and Cassandra Finnigan leading the offensive charge. Pitcher Riley Woodward contained Highline’s offense, allowing only one run and no hits throughout the game.

Highline’s standout performer was Abigail Wilkins, who hit a home run. Despite their effort, the T-Birds couldn’t match the offensive firepower of Douglas College.

In reflection of the season, the disappointment was evident among the team. No comments were given regarding the season, and the players remained silent in response to questions. It was clear that they were disappointed with their performance throughout the year.

Meanwhile, in the larger softball landscape, the championship was won by Southwestern Oregon Lakers. Led by Deztiny Vaughan, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, the Lakers claimed their first-ever softball title. Vaughan showcased an exceptional pitching performance, allowing only one run in 33 innings and striking out an impressive 61 hitters throughout the tournament.

Southwestern Oregon finishes their season as champions.

In the championship game against Clackamas, Vaughan continued her dominance, limiting their opponents to three hits and one run while striking out 12 batters. The Lakers provided ample run support, securing a 6-1 victory. All-Tournament selections Alapese Matautia, Sam Mansfield, Carissa Andrews, and Ryleigh Blaire also contributed to the Lakers’ success.

The Cougars of Clackamas put up a valiant effort but finished as runners-up in the tournament. Catcher Sophia Reyes, pitcher Riley Shopp, third baseman Cassidy Phelps, and shortstop Emily Dugan were recognized as all-tournament selections for their notable contributions.

Under the guidance of head coach Megan Corriea, SW Oregon Lakers’ coaching staff was honored as the NWAC Coach/Coaching Staff of the Year, recognizing their outstanding season and tournament run.
