The Thunderbirds golf team swings their way to seventh

Jeremy Beckwith Staff Reporter May 18, 2023

The Highline golf team finished seventh in the Southwestern Oregon Community College competition. At the Bandon Dunes golf course in Bandon, Ore., seven teams competed, including Highline.

Bellevue College took first place in the competition for men and posted a score of 580 as a team. Fraser Valley took first place for women as they posted a score of 474 as a team.

For the Thunderbirds men’s team, Tyler Alwart scored 72-76 and finished in 9th place; Kaiwen Lee scored 88-89 and came in 39th place; Tyler Fullerton scored 75-84 and tied for 25th place; and Derek Kapana scored 90-86 and came in 38th place.

For the Thunderbirds women’s team, Anjali Nadu scored 103-95 and finished in 17th place while Jadyn Shaw scored 136-105 and came in 21st place.

With how much travel the teams have done it can take a toll on the players mentally and physically, especially when traveling back-to-back weekends. But the Thunderbirds remain resilient with positive attitudes, and that is all you can ask for in your student athletes.

Despite the team finish, the players got more experience and will continue to improve in the coming week. The team has one more event on the schedule and it is an exciting opportunity to showcase their practice and hard work they continue to do to improve their skills.

The next time the Thunderbirds take the green will be May 21-22 at Apple Tree in Yakima Wash., for the NWAC championships.
