Students are encouraged to sign up for their spring time classes earlier than later as early looks at registration shows tentatively positive changes from last year.

Highline students may enroll for spring quarter courses as the quarter approaches on April 3, 2023.

The Highline registration website gives you step by step instructions on how to enroll into courses.

Students will need to login to their ctclink account, click the “Student Homepage” option, click on “Manage Classes”, then click on “Class Search and Enroll,” select the term “SPRING 2023,” type in a course that you are interested in enrolling, after clicking on a course you would like to enroll in, it will carry you through a list of questions to finally enroll, the website said.

Courses may show “Waitlisted,” in this case you may add yourself to the waitlist, but there may not be a guarantee of entry to the course.

Some courses that are offered in the spring quarter 2023 to be considered are: HONORS 200, MathP courses, and ENGL 290.

HONORS 200 – Transfer Seminar is a course that focuses on students who plan to transfer to a  four year university and apply for scholarships.

HONORS 200 course instructor and Honors Coordinator Jen Heckler said in an email that the course is 5 credits, available for students who are enrolled in college-level courses and can be taken online or asynchronously.

However, Heckler does mention in the same email the requirements to take HONORS 200 and credits the course may satisfy towards a students degree.

  • “Prerequisites: completion of English 101 and 12 college-level credits. If you’ve completed the prerequisites but have trouble registering, request a permission number!
  • Degree requirement: satisfies a Humanities area I or an elective requirement!
  • Transfers as a Humanities or elective (check for equivalency with the 4-year school),” she said.

Moving forward, instructor Barbara Hunter said in an email that the math department is also offering corequisite courses for spring quarter.

These courses include: MathP 107 – Math in Society Plus Extra Support, MathP 111 – College Algebra Plus Extra Support, MathP 141 – Precalculus 1 Plus Extra Support, and MathP 146 – Introduction to Statistics Plus Extra Support.

These courses are alternatives for students who may need some additional help in math courses.

“Corequisite courses are a great option for students who plan to take Math& 107, Math 111, Math& 141, Math& 146 but place a course below and could use extra support in a math class,” she said. “These courses will help students transition to college-level math within the current year and within the first 45 credits in their program of study. This way they are able to complete their program in a timely manner.”

Another course Highline offers in spring quarter is ENGL 290 – Editing: The Arcturus, a 5-credit course with instructor Susan Rich, faculty for the creative writing and film studies at Highline.

“Students learn to more deeply understand literary and visual art, they also function as a team. Developing leadership skills is a big part of being an Arcturus Editor, editors create college-wide events such as the book launch party in June,” Rich said.

Rich also said there are requirements before you may enroll in the ENGL 290 course.

“ENGL 101 is a pre-req for ENGL 290. Students sometimes take ENG 200 alongside Editing the Arcturus, but it is not required, only recommended,” she said. “The course is hands-on, experiential learning. It is my favorite class to teach.”

The ENGL 290 course has huge plans for spring quarter and will dive into magazine printing and publishing, Rich said.

“Spring quarter the editors will collaborate with the Highline College print shop as well as Highline Visual Communication students to create cover art for Arcturus 2023. Spring term is also when editors learn about the world of publishing and printing. Finally, on several occasions, editors have come back to tell me that being an Arcturus Editor was the most meaningful part of their education,” she said. “I think we are one of the hidden gems of Highline.”

Aside from the ENGL 290 course, Rich said there are other great writing courses students should enroll in.

“Creative Writing is a great class to take alongside Editing the Arcturus, but it is not required. An interest in literary and visual art is very useful. For this spring, an interest in business — in marketing and public relations would be great, too,” she said.

Many students have already begun to sign up for their classes in the upcoming quarter. An early look at overall registration shows positive changes in some categories when compared to last year. Enrollment at Highline has been fluctuating over the past few years, but overall has seen a decline.

February 28 is the ninth day of registration for spring quarter at Highline this year. All of the following numbers looked at in this story are taken from the ninth day of registration from 2023 and 2022, which may not be an accurate representation of what they will look like when the new quarter starts.

The total headcount is up to 2,339. Last year, on the ninth day of registration, the total headcount was at 2,264.

Despite the headcount being a bit higher than at this point last year, the number of credits being taken by students is slightly lower.

Student credits are measured by full time equivalents, which is how many credits are being taken that would equate to one full time student.

One full time equivalent could be taken from two different students, one taking one five credit class, the other taking two, bringing their total credits up to 15 credits, which could be measured as one full time equivalent.

The total full time equivalents for this year is down to 1,604, whereas last year it was at 1,647.

Additionally, within these registration numbers, students can further be divided into several different categories.

For example, this year, the bachelor headcount, or students enrolling in bachelor’s degree programs, is down to 161 from 192 from the year before. However, worker retraining is up to a head count of 103 as opposed to last years 33. Running start hasn’t seen too much change. The headcount was at 583, this year it is at 506.

The last day to enroll in courses is April 5, 2023, two days after spring quarter begins so students may need to be aware of time as courses fill up quickly.
