Highline golfers come up short at championships

Four Highline golfers aimed for season bests, but played below expectations at the championships.

Last weekend in Yakima, the Bellevue Lady Bulldogs claimed the NWAC team title with an overall score of 478 (+46). Bellevue’s Sarah Lawrence was the overall medalist, finishing with a score of 150 (+6) over the two-day competition. Five NWAC women’s teams and 34 players competed. 

Freshman Brooklyn Grant tied for 16th place with a score of 178 (+19) and a birdie in the first round. 

“Brooklyn played steady, but had a couple problems here and there,” said Highline Head Coach Steve Turcotte.

Sophomore Ashlynn Verhaaren placed 19th with a score 186 (+22) and improved by 11 strokes with a score of 84 in the second round. 

“Ashlynn shot one of her best scores of the year. There were a couple hiccups, but she played well overall,” said Turcotte.

Faylisa Valle placed 26th with 186 (+22) and a birdie in the 18th hole of the second round. 

Paige Unke placed 32th with a score of 242 (+98) and improved by 12 strokes in the second round. 

“All of them expected to play a little better and went into the championships with high hopes,” said Turcotte.

“This year, we can never quite put two good rounds together in one weekend,” said Turcotte

With the season at a close, sophomores Faylisa Valle and Ashlynn Verhaaren are setting down their Thunderbird golf clubs and picking up their diplomas next month. 

This fall, Highline women’s golf will welcome three incoming freshman players to the program.
