Three Thunderbirds punch their tickets to golf championships

Rebecca Zenger Staff Reporter May 05, 2022

Three Lady T-Birds have qualified for the NWAC golf championships after last weekend’s results.

Highline placed sixth among seven teams in the Centralia Invitational last weekend with a total score of 756 (+95).

Highline teed off a new program record in the first nine holes of the tournament. The Thunderbirds collectively went 15 over par in the first 9 holes in the first round.

This was a nice highlight, but the team just couldn’t bring it to the finish line, said Highline Head Coach Steve Turcotte.

Brookly Grant placed 13th with a total score of 168 (+26), Ashlynn Verhaaren placed 21st with 174 (+10), Faylisa Valle placed 29th with 168 (+44), and Paige Unke placed 228 (+42).

Third-year player Ashlynn Verhaaren had a big turnaround from 93 to 81 in the second round. This was the best performance of her college career, said Coach Turcotte.

Highline didn’t make the top five teams, but Brooklyn Grant, Ashlynn Verhaaren, and Faylisa Valle qualified to represent Highline in the individual championship bracket.

The Lady T-Birds will play on May 7-8 in the Southwestern Oregon Invitational in Bandon, Ore.

The Bandon Crossings Course is nice, fair, but challenging for many players, said Turcotte.

This is the final regular season tournament before the NWAC Championship on May 22-23 in Yakima.
