Golf team seeks improvement as championships near

Rebecca Zenger Staff Reporter Apr 28, 2022

Highline women’s golf placed sixth in the Bellevue Invitational and are swinging for a spot at the championships next month.

At the Bellevue Course, Highline recorded a team score of 560 (+134). Thunderbird Faylisa Valle finished the highest for the T-Birds in 23rd place with a total score of 178 (+36). Not far behind was Ashlynn Verhaaren who placed 25th with 179 (+37).

Highline Head Coach Steve Turcotte said the women’s putting and short game is still a work in progress. However, he said he has seen a notable improvement in players’ shots over the two-day tournament.

Faylisa Valle improved by four shots and Paige Unke by 18 shots. Highline’s routinely top ranked player, Brooklyn Brant, was unable to compete in the first round.

In NWAC golf, there are four total league matches throughout the season. One is held in fall and three in spring.

This weekend, the Thunderbirds will tee-off in the third and final league match. The tournament will be hosted by Centralia at the Riverside Golf Course on May 1-2.

Each tournament course has unique terrain and obstacles that teams must navigate.

“The course is a little tricky and challenging with its tight tree lines,” said Coach Turcotte.

The women’s golf championship is just around the corner on May 23-24 in Yakima, at the Apple Tree Golf Course.

This weekend’s results will determine the top five teams and the 36 players punching their tickets to playoffs.
