The Hub, Federal Way Higher Education Center opened on Jan. 7 for classes and public tours.

Due to concerns about Omicron, the ribbon-cutting event was postponed, however, people could join a building tour and get an explanation of their facilities.

The Hub is a partnership among Highline, the University of Washington-Tacoma, the City of Federal Way and Federal Way Public Schools.

They have two main classrooms, a computer lab, conference room, student lounge and a quiet study room that everyone can use for their own studies.

Classrooms are equipped with cutting edge facilities such as a microphone array and live camera so that professors in other places can discuss with students remotely.

Their restrooms are gender-neutral and they also have a room called a “wellness room” which anyone can use for nursing their children, praying, and any other purpose when they need a private space.

Tammy Hauge, a program manager of the Hub, said they are excited to have students in the Hub.

“We are so excited that students will come to the Hub and start their class on Jan. 10, Monday,” she said last week. “Also we always welcome Highline students to come visit.”

They offer classes, placement tests, and student support services. Students can take part in for-credit courses of Introduction to Communication and Introduction to Statistics Plus Extra Support through Highline, professional development courses of Project Management through the UW Tacoma Professional Development Center. Students can also take placement tests such as Accuplacer, MyMathTest, and Directed Self Placement, as well as TEAS testing for Nursing Program Admissions.

The Hub is located at 1615 S. 325th Street in Federal Way, and is open Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and Wednesdays noon-5 p.m.
