Keslee Rain Schenck Staff Reporter Apr 29, 2021

The Highline’s women’s volleyball team is six games into their jam-packed season with a record of 1-3, with two games being cancelled due to COVID.

The Thunderbirds season started unevenlyTheir first game was cancelled part way through due to a positive COVID test result, frustrating players who have been waiting to play since fall 2019.

“We all just want to play volleyball,” said Team Captain Lauren Clark.

The women’s volleyball season looks different this year due to the pandemic. The team also has to make do with only nine players.

Nonetheless, “Everyone has stepped their game up and filled their position well,” Clark said.

Even though the team is shorthanded, the players are giving it their all and just making the best of the season they get to have, she said.

The coaches are also putting in effort to make the COVID season memorable. The season may be shorter and have more unforeseen obstacles, but the team is fighting through it physically and mentally, said Clark.

This season the Lady Thunderbirds have been utilizing their offensive talent.

“I believe our biggest strength is our offense,” Clark said. “We have one of the most talented offensive line ups all around the board.”

After the first game being cancelled due to COVID the team then fell to the undefeated Lower Columbia on the road, 3-2, in their second game of the season.

Lower Columbia has been marching all season only losing two sets out of all six games, those sets being to the Highline women’s volleyball team.

For the Lady T-Birds’ third matchup of the year, they defeated Centralia away with a final of 3-2.

After facing another cancellation due to an athlete on Pierce’s women’s volleyball team contracting the virus, the Highline women’s volleyball team faced another loss at home vs. Tacoma, 3-0.

The Highline women’s volleyball team then met Lower Columbia again in their sixth game so far and again fell to their rivals with a final of 3-0.

The Lady Thunderbirds played Wednesday, April 28 against Centralia. Scores unavailable at time of press release.

The team will then play at Pierce on May 5 at 7 p.m.
