Renton Civic returns to the stage with ‘Accomplice’

Faith Chao Staff Reporter Apr 14, 2022

A game of trickery and misdirection, a story of who is the hunter and who is the hunted, with adultery and murder in the air. Accomplice, an award-winning play published in 1990 by Rupert Holmes, playwright, lyricist, and composer, will be performed at the Renton Civic Theatre starting April 15.

Holmes is the author of the 1985 Tony-Award winning musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which was based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished novel. Holmes is also known for his No. 1 Billboard hit, Escape (The Piña Colada Song), which was released in 1979.

Accomplice isn’t quite as fluffy as that song.

“The story begins in Dartmoor, England at the stylish weekend retreat of the affluent Derek and Janet Taylor,” said Bill Huls, who is directing Accomplice, and is the artistic director of the Renton Civic Theatre.

“We soon learn that all is never as it seems, and who is the title character of Accomplice,” Huls said. “This show is a comedy, mystery-thriller with an amazing cast: Emily Beckley, Robert Barnett, and JAG Alex Ward.”

Accomplice is best for fans of mystery, murder, and plenty of humor.

“The play is recommended for those 16 and older, and runs just over two hours,” said Huls.

Like the end of every murder mystery there is a victim, and to find out the who, why, and how, you will have to see the show.

The play will premiere on April 15 and will be in-person. Tickets for seniors and students are $21. Tickets for adults are $26.

Show dates for Accomplice are on April 15-16 at 8 p.m., April 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. April 21 and 28 at 7:30 p.m.

The show will play on April 22-23 at 8 p.m. and the last showing of Accomplice will be April 29-30 at 8 p.m.
